Albany Junior Soccer Association hold preliminary rounds for under-12s and under-13s the knockout cup comp

Albany Junior Soccer Association kicked off the second half of the season with preliminary rounds for the knockout cup competition for the under-12s and under-13s last Saturday.

Winners were guaranteed a place in the next round while the losers had to hope that results would go their way to see if they would benefit by being one of the better losers to grab a place in the quarterfinals.

The big game in the under-12s was league table toppers Albany Primary taking on the third-placed Grammar side.

Earlier in the season, Albany Primary got the better of their rivals, winning a 5-4 thriller.

However, this was low scoring but just as thrilling with Grammar netting the first goal through Harry McPharlin before Albany Primary equalised through Nicolas Kinnane.

In the second half, there were chances for both sides but it was Grammar’s McPharlin who scored the winning goal to get his side through to the next round, where they will face ACC Southlands after they narrowly beat St Joseph, 3-2.

Also through to the quarters are Yakamia, who comfortably beat Mt Lockyer.

Denmark were victorious against John Calvin, Parklands finished winners against Flinders Blue and Little Grove defeated Flinders Red, 4-0.

In the under-13s cup, Denmark White held on to defeat Grammar, who are two spots above them in the league, 1-0.

Pia Gamblin gave Denmark the lead and despite a host of chances Grammar were not able to find their way back into the game.

Their sister team, Denmark Black, also battled their way through to the next round with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Albany Bayswater.

Polonia White were in the lead at one point but could not prevent John Calvin winning their match as Devon Vermeulen scored all of John Calvin’s four goals.

Polonia Red safely navigated their way into the next round, beating Albany Bayswater.
