Centennial Stadium will be renamed Retravision Stadium under a new sponsorship deal to help keep the venue ticking over for the next three years.

City of Albany councillors went behind closed doors at Tuesday’s council meeting to vote on a recommendation made by the Centennial Stadium Committee.

They voted 10-1 to approve the renaming, with Cr Thomson voting against. The City of Albany owns the Centennial Stadium building but the selection process was co-ordinated by the external committee.

“The City’s role in the naming rights process is only to approve the final recommendation of the sponsor,” executive director corporate and commercial services Duncan Olde said.

Retravision’s name will now be displayed on signage on the outside of the building and around the oval for the next three years.

Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said the sponsorship arrangement was a “good move”.

He said Centennial Oval would keep its name, with the building to be renamed Retravision Stadium.

“It is a practicality of life, you need money to keep the stadium going,” he said.

“The two clubs that run it need the support, and the company is seen fit to do that — it is the same as Optus Stadium.

“It is a costly exercise to keep up the uptake and it was always something that was planned.”
