Cinemas back in reel time

The popcorn machines are firing up at Orana Cinemas as the State prepares to launch into phase three of the easing of COVID-19 restrictions from Saturday.

Gathering restrictions will be lifted to 100 people per space, with up to 300 people allowed in settings with separated areas, such as cinemas.

After being forced to close for more than two months, Orana Cinemas manager Memo Cardoza said the team was raring to go.

“I have missed seeing the customers and the atmosphere of the cinema — to see the screens on and the smell of popcorn,” he said.

“We are trying to get ready for this weekend and we will have some specials for the kids and the families.”

Mr Cardoza said it was still unclear how the Australian film industry would be affected by shutdowns in the US but it might be some time before big blockbusters hit our shores.

“I’m glad we are getting some movies to bring to the people of Albany,” he said.

He said the cinema would follow social-distancing rules and keep two seats between groups.

“We want to make everyone comfortable,” he said.

“We are happy to go back to work, not just for us but for everyone in the community.

“There will be plenty of fresh popcorn.”
