Leading Albany trainer Steve Wolfe returned to the winners’ circle for the first time since December 31, scoring a winning double at Mt Barker Turf Club on Sunday.

Wolfe did not prepare a winner at Albany last meeting but teamed up with Peter Hall to taste victory twice in Mt Barker.

The pair combined with nine-year-old stayer Mr Pago to win the TABtouch Better Your Bet Handicap (1850m) by 0.6 lengths.

Hall settled the gelding in fourth, taking off before the home corner and hitting the lead at the top of the straight and holding off Hyperspace.

The four-year-old settled well off the pace before storming down the middle of the track to grab runaway leader Sauvegarde inside the final 100m and win by one length.

“Oxbridge will just go through the grades but I’m hoping he can win a race in town,” Wolfe said.

“He is racing in career-best form and his win on Sunday was really pleasing because he had to chase hard.

“Mr Pago is coming to the end of his career but we keep these types of horses going to keep the numbers up, hopefully he can win another one.

“Hally riding 100 winners for me is a major achievement when he isn’t the number one rider, it shows great loyalty by both trainer and jockey.”
