Vital Boom ends long drought in fine style

well travelled six-year-old gelding Vital Boom has returned to the winner’s stall for the first time in more than700 days after taking out the Off The Track Handicap (1910m) on Mungrup Stud Sprint day, back in the stable of original trainer Neil Lee.

Transferred back to Lee a fortnight ago, Vital Boom produced a great turn of foot in the home straight to record just his second win in 42 career starts.

Vital Boom spent time with trainer Angela Smith, including several runs in the north of WA.

Settling worse than midfield in running for Natasha Faithfull, Vital Boom was put into the race at the 800m mark and was second as the field turned for home before hitting the lead and kicking away to win by over two lengths from Mygirlfrankie.

Dual-code trainer Matthew Scott brought up a double on Sunday after he prepared a pacing winner at Narrogin and then thoroughbred Dolly Em saluted in Albany just two hours later.

Sent out a $21 chance for apprentice Beaux Banovic-Edwards, Dolly Em went to the front in the Volunteer Fire Fighters Handicap (1450m) and held off all challenges in the straight to defeat the favourite Triggerfish by 0.8 lengths.

Dolly Em was the second leg of a double for Banovic-Edwards, who earlier booted home 10-year-old marvel Tranquilla Sunrise.

The Roy Rogers-trained gelding had no support in the market jumping out at $41 on the tote but the young apprentice was able to find the front from barrier 11 and was never headed in the straight to win the Western Racepix Handicap (1240m) by one length.

Rogers said he was confident going into the run.

“I knew he would be there, last start he was out of the gates slow but I told Beaux to bounce him out and find the front,” Rogers said.

“I thought it was a gallant performance, he had some pressure on the outside at top of the straight but kicked away nicely.”

Leading trainer Steve Wolfe had a double on the nine-race card while visiting Bunbury trainer Graham Yuill had a stable quinella in the first race.

Rebecca Wallrodt brought up her third winner of the season when impressive youngster Spiculus won the Iron Jack Maiden (1100m) for jockey Jason Whiting
