Derby District High School has been awarded $10,000 to develop a horsemanship program for students considering a career in pastoralism.

The program was one of 23 recipients of the Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal’s youth innovation grants.

FRRR chief executive Natalie Egleton said she is impressed by the grant recipients.

“These grants highlight the importance of both providing support on the ground and ensuring that young people are driving the conversation about their priorities,” she said.

“These community-led initiatives, which all involve young people, will facilitate events, training and mentorship that will bring people together and ensure that our remote, rural and regional communities continue to thrive.”

The recipients were reviewed by a committee consisting of young people before being put to the FRRR board.

Derby’s program was the only successful recipient in WA under the latest funding round.
