The Broome Horse Riders’ Club hosted the first of what it hopes will become an annual barrel competition at the Jack Knox rodeo arena on the outskirts of town this month.

A small crowd gathered on Saturday, November 13, to watch riders take to the ring to compete in the standalone barrels event.

Jade Madalena and her horse, Bonnie, Tessa Bergmann and Buckie, and Cassie Yates riding Charlie were declared the inaugural winners of the night.

Broome Horse Riders’ Club president Jennifer Reinert said the first run was a good platform to grow the event from.

“We really hope to get other clubs in the region involved,” she said.

“Members from Derby and Fitzroy would be amazing, we could have a small series”

Each entrant for the event was given two runs of the barrels, with the winner decided by averaging the runs.

The small but vocal crowd was captivated by the competition, in particular cheering on and encouraging some of the younger riders and rookies taking on barrels in their first competitive event.

The club has already gathered sponsorship from Yarnie King, a well-known barrel racer and trainer from down south.

BHRC is now looking for local sponsors for events and competitions.

The event was free for spectators, with a sausage sizzle put on by the club to raise money.
