An uncontrolled bushfire poses a possible threat to lives and homes in the town of York in Western Australia's Wheatbelt region.

An emergency warning was issued for people in the southern part of the town, 97km east of Perth, after the blaze was reported just before 2pm on Wednesday.

It has since been downgraded to a watch and act message.

Residents who are not prepared to actively defend their homes should leave while the path is clear, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services said.

Firefighters are battling the blaze, which is moving in a northeasterly direction and is contained but not controlled.
