Narrogin netballers compete with the best at 2022 Fuel to Go & Play Association Championships in Perth

Narrogin & Districts Netball Association were strongly represented at the 2022 Fuel to Go & Play Association Championships at Mathews Netball Centre in Jolimont on the WA Day long weekend.

The three-day competition has been running since the early 1950s and about 3200 Netball WA members, including a total of five teams and more than 65 NDNA players, competed for titles across the 39 divisions.

COVID caused some problems for the NDNA’s Rising Stars junior development program participants and officials in preparation for the championships but all made a full recovery in time to travel to Perth.

The under-13 division seven team contained many fresh faces this year, including coach Rebecca Miller, who was pleased with the way that her players combined and developed in confidence with each game as they finished third.

Gutsy and versatile Flames player Kiesha Bransby was awarded most valuable player and Flames’ Katie Vitalone received the coaches award.

Sarah Corner drew on her vast coaching experience and enjoyed success with her under-14 division six green squad as they took out the title with an eight-goal win over Eaton, 21-13.

Kate Cousins (Olympics) was MVP and provided plenty of options in attack, shooting with accuracy across the weekend and was ably supported by exciting defender and Waves player Heidi Ackland and Waves mid-court player Kate Corner.

After convincing wins in every game, the under-16 division six white Narrogin team continued their domination, defeating Joondalup 30-9 in the final.

Imogen Annear (Olympics) took many strong intercepts in wing defence, limiting Joondalup’s ability to penetrate the goal circle, while Cuballing’s Amelia Corasaniti provided run through the mid-court.

After a strong weekend in defence, MVP for the championships went to Flames’ Kiana Roser, with coach Lee Conlan highlighting her positive influence.

Having participated in the Rising Stars program for many years, the under-20 division three players were determined to take out the title in what would be their final association campaign as a team.

They met Geraldton in the final, where strong rebounding by Flames defender Denica Stoffberg and Williams attacker Kate Poultney’s precise feeding into the shooters was not enough to get them over the line, going down 26-22.

First-time association coach Erin Streeton awarded Cuballing’s Mia Slawinski as MVP after a strong defensive display.

As a result of winning the 2021 NDNA A1 title, Wagin was invited to represent the NDNA in the open division.

Continuing the accurate shooting shown during the home and away season, Wagin’s Courtney Webb was a reliable option in goals.

Competing against seven teams from metro and country areas, the team won four of their games and finished fourth on the ladder.

After a strong weekend’s performance in the mid-court, Wagin’s Jodie Sercombe was awarded MVP.
