Narrogin Sporting Shooters hosts its first WA Lever Action State Championships

Narrogin Sporting Shooters held their first WA Lever Action State Championships in Narrogin earlier this month, with Perth shooter Brett Worner winning in the two-gun title.

The event was initially set to take place at the Geraldton Shooting Range but because of COVID complications, it was moved to Narrogin.

Worner won the two-gun aggregate division with a final score of 760.08, pipping Albany shooter Steve Hurley who finished on 754.10, ahead of Perth’s Jimmy Hay (737.01) in third place.

Albany’s Joel Evans rounded out the top four with a score of 725.07.

Narrogin Sporting Shooters president Ray Wilson said it was an exciting opportunity for the local club to hold a State championship event.

“It was the first time Narrogin has held any large (shooting) event and it just happened to be the WA State Title,” he said.

“Geraldton was meant to have it but because that didn’t end up happening, they had to find a new venue and they rang us . . . so we had about two months to get ready for it.

“Hopefully they’re going to come down and shoot more often in Narrogin and next time it’s up for grabs, we’ll have a go.

“It was a great event, the weather held off, the weekend before was freezing and the wind was blowing but it didn’t blow on the day so it was quite good.”

In the AAA open category, Worner again claimed first place with a score of 455.05, with Hurley (452.06) and Albany’s Mick McDonald (423.03) finishing second and third respectively.

In the AA open division, Albany duo Mark Van Der Muelen (420.04) and Rob Crosby (415.01) finished in first and second respectively, ahead of Perth’s Marcus Bamford (412.01).

Perth shooter Keith Fisk (416.00) won the A open division, Brian Endersby (265.00) from Perth emerged victorious in the B-grade division and Nyabing shooter Ed Dixon (320.00) secured first place in C-grade.

Narrogin’s sole competitor at the tournament, Kalei Franks, finished with a score of 120.00 to finish in third place in the open C division.

In the classic calibre categories, Hay was the victor in AAA grade with an impressive score of 313.01, with Worner (305.03) winning the AA grade title.

Van Der Muelen (286.11) won the A-grade category while Worner (275.01) and Liz Ellis (262.03) won the B and C-grade respectively.
