Extra DV worker sought

A Pilbara refuge centre has called for more family and domestic violence funding after a surge in demand left vulnerable Pilbara residents slipping through the cracks.

Mission Australia only has capacity to employ one full-time worker in the Pilbara, located in Karratha, leaving much of the region unable to access vital domestic violence services.

A second worker, based in South Hedland, was trialled for six months but additional funding was required to sustain the position long term.

Mission Australia Pilbara program manager Helen McMahon said that at a minimum, a second full-time worker was required immediately to adequately support women and their children in the Pilbara, especially given the recent demand because of COVID-19.

“Whilst we understand that the Government’s resources are limited, the need for family and domestic violence support in the Pilbara is critical,” she said.
