New Zealand’s Block of Land has taken out the Port Hedland Cup following a stellar ride from jockey Kayla Cross which saw the horse finish 3.5 lengths clear of its rivals.

The Port Hedland Cup took place at the Nor West Jockey Club on July 31 with punters from across the region descending on the race track just outside Roebourne for an action-packed day.

The event was held at the Nor West Jockey club due to the construction of Port Hedland’s new Sports and Community hub leaving the Hedland Turf Club without facilities to host events and cater for its members.

In the main race, a 2200m handicap, Cross rode Block of Land in a dominant performance leading for the majority of the race before crossing the finish line 3.5 lengths clear of second placed Crossaro while Bellini Boy rounded out the top three.
