The long-awaited Kununurra water playground is a step closer to reality, but it remains unclear when the first sod will be turned on the $3.2 million project.

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley announced Australian company Water Features by Design as the successful tenderer to construct and design the water park at last Tuesday’s council meeting.

The Perth-based company has designed more than 30 major water parks across Australia, including at Cue, Yalgoo, Onslow, Carnarvon and Cable Beach Club.

It was selected over five competing contractors after being shortlisted to the Shire’s three preferred tenderers in February.

The State Government funded water park will be built adjacent to Kununurra Leisure and Aquatic Centre as part of stage one of the Shire’s plans to redevelop the facility.

The playground will be free for all community members and include a splash pad and a water spray area for toddlers.

The Shire has been investigating a redevelopment of the 38-year old KALC for the past decade as existing facilities reach the end of their useful life.

It will announce a timeframe for construction on the water park once design details have been finalised.

SWEK president David Menzel said progress of the project towards construction had been a long process, but he was confident it would be worth the wait.

“The establishment of this water playground will play a significant role in enhancing our community and all the great things it offers,” he said.

“It will act as a tourism feature for our town and increase liveability for our region.”
