AAMI report reveals WA’s crash hotspots and most dangerous time of day to drive

Albany Highway in Cannington has been revealed as WA’s worst crash hotspot, according to data from a national insurer. AAMI has released its Decade of Driving Report examining the last 10 years of crash claims data. After analysing more than 4.3 million motor claims across Australia, the Insurer found that Albany Highway in Cannington was the State’s worst location for crashes. Great Eastern Highway in Midland was second, followed — not surprisingly — by Perth’s Mitchell Freeway. Karrinyup Road in Karrinyup, Joondalup Drive in Joondalup and Canning Highway in Applecross were the next in the ranks. The analysis also found that the most dangerous times to drive in WA were between 1pm and 4.30pm, with Friday being particularly troublesome. The top three most common claims stemmed from nose-to-tail crashes, slamming into a stationary object and accidents while parking. Among the remarkable insights, the report found that drivers above the age of 65 were the most dangerous behind the wheel, with just over a quarter of claims being attributed to them. When it comes to the battle of the sexes, women won out over male drivers. Men were “significantly” more likely to crash, accounting for 54 per cent of claims. For the regions, Albany Highway in Albany and the Great Northern Highway in Port Hedland ranked 9th and 10th in the crash hotspots table. Kangaroos contributed most to claims lodged from collisions with animals, with Baldivis ranking number one, followed by Carnarvon and Margaret River.
