Just two days after publicly declaring he’s mentally ready to play for Australia, Victorian dynamo Will Pucovski has put on a batting clinic against South Australia.

Together with fellow Victorian opener Marcus Harris, the duo put on an unbeaten 418-run stand at Glenelg in the Sheffield Shield clash.

Pucovski finished day two unbeaten on 199. Harris, the former Australian opener, did his Test case no harm in the partnership with Pucovski, remaining not out on 207.

The duo set a new Victorian record along the way, as the highest ever opening stand since Bill Woodfull and Bill Ponsford’s 375 set back in 1926.

Pucovski has long been deemed a star of the future by Australian selectors, but made himself unavailable due to mental health issues before sustaining an eighth concussion in February.

The now 22-year-old this week confirmed he made the right call to take himself out of the selection frame.

“I have done a lot of work in the last year to get me that little bit further down the line, and I feel like I am in a really good space now,” Pucovski said.

“It’s been an interesting year or two and it’s hard for people to understand, but I am very happy with where I am at.

“I don’t have much control over whether (selectors) pick me, but I am definitely very keen (to play Test cricket). It’s been a dream of mine since I can remember.”

It’s been a big week for Pucovski who this week signed his first Big Bash League deal, joining the Melbourne Stars.

The runs flowed for Pucovski agaisnt South Australia, hitting 22 fours and a six in his 308-ball 199*.

His highest ever score came against WA in 2018, scoring 243.

South Australia, who were all out for 200 in their first innings, just had no answers for the Victorian openers and face an almighty effort to attempt to salvage a draw.
