Mount Ridley adds key tech hire to fast-track WA rare earths plans

Mount Ridley Mines has appointed its inaugural chief technology officer, signalling a deliberate strategic pivot from defining resources to developing and commercialising its own critical minerals processing technology.

The appointment of metallurgist Chris Larder, who has overseen Mount Ridley’s technical programs since April, is aimed at bringing the company’s downstream technology development in-house.

The board appears keen to ensure technical progress remains tightly aligned with commercial outcomes, approving 24 million performance rights for Larder, with vesting conditions that paint a vivid picture of the company’s downstream ambitions.

Alongside share price milestones, the hurdles include filing a provisional patent for proprietary processing technology, producing a mixed rare earth oxide product with at least 99 per cent purity from a pilot plant or licensing the technology to a third party. A third, and possibly most telling, performance hurdle is tied to the commercial sale of the company’s intellectual property for at least $10 million.

Mount Ridley has spent recent months assembling one of Australia’s more compelling multi-commodity critical minerals inventories at its 100 per cent-owned flagship Grass Patch development near Esperance in Western Australia.

The project now hosts JORC-compliant inferred resources of 122.5 million tonnes grading 889ppm total rare earth oxide, 368 million tonnes grading 57.3ppm scandium and a massive 838 million tonnes running at 39.5ppm gallium oxide.

Unlike many critical minerals projects focused on a single commodity, Grass Patch hosts heavy rare earths, scandium and gallium within the same broader mineralised system, making the development of an integrated processing route potentially far more valuable.

With that kind of scale already in the bag, the focus is shifting from discovery to value creation, with metallurgy emerging as the key to unlocking the project’s full potential.

Historical metallurgical test work has already returned heavy rare earth recoveries of up to 86.5 per cent and beneficiation upgrades of as much as 200 per cent, giving the company an encouraging technical foundation to build on.

As our technical programs continue to progress, appointing a dedicated chief technology officer provides responsibilities across these initiatives and reflects the Board’s confidence in the work currently underway.

Meanwhile, independent metallurgical test work on Grass Patch material is ongoing with a focus on producing a mixed rare earth oxide product, with results to be released as they become available.

Larder’s appointment is the latest step in a carefully sequenced strategy that has seen Mount Ridley define globally significant critical minerals resources through historical re-assays, launch advanced metallurgical programs and broaden its access to US capital markets through an OTC listing.

Adding to the list, the company has partnered with the CSIRO to investigate scandium alloy applications that could open new opportunities in aerospace, defence and advanced manufacturing.

It has also collaborated with the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to explore the strategic potential of its critical minerals portfolio.

Taken together, these developments suggest the company is steadily building the technical expertise, strategic partnerships and market profile needed to shift from a resource explorer into a developer of proprietary critical minerals processing technology. The changes appear well timed as Western nations increasingly search for secure non-Chinese supplies of rare earths and other critical minerals.

The company still has plenty of work ahead before that vision becomes reality. Larder’s appointment as Chief Technology Officer suggests Mount Ridley is no longer thinking like a traditional explorer. It is laying the foundations for a business that could ultimately own both the minerals and the intellectual property needed to unlock them. For market watchers, that’s a very different proposition to simply digging rocks out of the ground.
