Former ADF Information Warfare boss Marcus Thompson warns businesses should be ready for a ransomware crisis

The man who used to helm the Australian Army’s Information Warfare division believes ransomware drills, a culture of accountability and even a good old-fashioned phone call would go a long way in shielding businesses from rampant cyber crime. “The same way you get into a car and put on a seatbelt, the same way that as you walk through the door you lock the door behind; I think it’s the same with with cyberspace,” Marcus Thompson, who served as a Major General in the Australian Defence Force, told The West Australian during a visit to Perth. A string of high-profile cyber attacks against the likes of Optus, Medibank and Latitude in the past two years have put Australian businesses on red alert to make sure they are protecting personal and sensitive customer data, amid a rising occurrence of similar breaches. It’s the main thing keeping CEOs awake at night, according to a KPMG survey done earlier this year. And by Mr Thompson’s reckoning, ignorance on this front is “no excuse”. Organisations hit by these attacks are often met with ransom demands in return for stolen data, a crisis situation Mr Thompson businesses now needed to be proactively preparing for well beforehand. “You don’t have to be Fort Knox in cyberspace to avoid some of this stuff,” Mr Thompson, who works as a senior adviser to Macquarie Technology Group, said. “Ideally, that you’ve thought about it beforehand, and you’ve run simulations and exercises at board levels to actually think about who’s got decision making authorities? Under what circumstance might we consider paying a ransom? Who will we engage with in terms of law enforcement and the National Cybersecurity Coordinator... our shareholders?” Without the financial muscle to defend themselves, he said smaller businesses were especially vulnerable to cyber crime, an element that makes the question of whether it should be legal to pay ransoms a hotly-debated topic. “I don’t want an ASX top 20 company handing over $10 million dollars to professional criminal gangs. But should it be illegal? (It’s a) vexed policy question,” he said. “I would hate to ever see a day where a small business owner or an SME ... is put in a position where they either go bankrupt by not getting the data unlocked or potentially go to jail for paying a ransom.” An incident earlier this year in Hong Kong where an employee working for a multinational firm transferred $US25 million to scammers, reportedly per the instruction of the CFO who actually turned out to be a ‘deepfake’, has also created a new area of concern. “That was a video, even just voice deep fake. Someone finds a video of you on YouTube or something or ... calls you on your phone, engages you for a couple of sentences, that might be enough to have a voice deepfake that many of our banks, for example, use as an authentication mechanism.” For businesses, he said something as simple as picking up the phone with other another party to confirm an account number, could be a cheap and simple way of adding another layer of protection. “That’s just a procedural aspect to all of this that I think is at times underplayed,” he said.
