Mineral Resources eyes lithium job cuts via big roster changes for hundreds of workers, gets Onslow FIRB tick

Workers at two Mineral Resources lithium mines in WA will either have to spend more time on site or put their hand up for a redundancy, as the embattled miner looks to slash costs. The West Australian understands about 800 workers will be affected by rosters shifting from two weeks on, two weeks off, to two weeks on, one week off. Meanwhile, a different saving grace for the company’s debt laden balance sheet could be around the corner after the sale of a 49 per cent stake in the Onslow haul road for $1.3 billion was sealed. MinRes announced to the ASX on Tuesday afternoon it had found $300 million in savings for the current financial year across its business “including in the lithium division”. “Cost savings in lithium include a reduction to operational headcount by transitioning to a two weeks on, one week off roster (from a two weeks on, two weeks off roster) at the Mt Marion and Wodgina operations,” the company said. “Employees have been notified and these changes will take effect over the next four to six weeks. “There is no change to the lithium FY2025 production guidance or mining services FY2025 volume guidance as a result of these operational changes.” MinRes is offering redundancies to workers that do not want to stomach the roster change. The exact number of redundancies on offer is yet to be determined, The West Australian understands. Wodgina in the Pilbara has about 920 workers, while Mt Marion in the Goldfields sustains roughly 820 employees. But the roster changes will mainly affect blue collar roles. The company’s Bald Hill mine, which is also located in the Goldfields, is already on a 2:1 roster. All of MinRes’ lithium mines are losing money at current lithium prices. “As foreshadowed in our full year results, MinRes is focused on reducing costs and preserving cash in response to a period of low lithium prices and a softer iron ore price,“ the company’s boss Chris Ellison said on Tuesday. “We continue to identify measures to reduce capital and operational expenditure to suit the business environment.“ MinRes on Tuesday also informed the market it had received Foreign Investment Review Board approval for the sale of the 49 per cent Onslow haul road stake — a sale first announced in June — to Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners. FIRB approval was never really in doubt but the final tick off clears the way for MinRes to get its $1.1b up-front payment from MSIP within the next 15 business days. The cash is sorely needed as the diversified miner grapples with a lithium price crash, a weakening iron ore market, and the construction of its Onslow Iron project. MinRes’ cash pile was reduced by $471m to $900m over the year to June 30, while net debt has ballooned from $1.9b to $4.4b. Onslow will be cash flow positive from next month, MinRes said on Tuesday. The haul road, which forms a key part of the Onslow Iron project, is also scheduled to be complete next month.
