Nic Naitanui dons BHP hi-vis on site visit to the Pilbara as part of post-footy ambassadorial role

Former West Coast Eagles star Nic Naitanui has swapped the Sherrin for steel caps during a mine site visit and hinted at a potential career move. The popular ruckman took a trip to BHP’s Newman iron ore operations in the Pilbara this week where he visited all the schools in town and joined a BHP community event to mingle with the locals. Mr Naitanui has been an Eagles ambassador since hanging up the boots last year and his visit to Newman was part of BHP’s sponsorship of the football club. BHP gifted personalised hi-vis to Nic Nat, who has a large contingent of his family working in the mining industry. “I’ll be wearing it to the next family dinner, just to let them know I’ve got the kit,” he told the Sunday Times. “They’ve been wearing my kit and jersey for a number of years, so it’s time I repay that favour. “Bit of impostor syndrome not wearing dirty clothes, but it’s a prerequisite for coming out here — putting on the steel cap boots and hi vis, it feels a little bit different.” Mr Naitanui said he enjoyed coming site visits to meet local kids and BHP’s workforce. “It’s very far and few between where they (the kids) get to see someone from an AFL club, so they’re always pretty excited every time one of us do come up here. “It’s good to get out on site and connect with some of the crew up here. “The workers here have tonnes to be proud of, there are a lot of great things happening. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll be working here too.” Mr Naitanui is of Fijian heritage and played a three-time All Australian across a 213-game career for West Coast. Known for his freakish athleticism, he claimed the AFL’s mark of the year in 2015 and became a life member of the Eagles in 2018.
