Perth Festival review: Electro-soul duo Electric Fields flick switch to launch East Perth Power Station venue

More than 40 years since the East Perth Power Station deactivated, South Australian electro-soul duo Electric Fields re-energised the latest Perth Festival contemporary music venue on Friday night to flick the switch on the 2025 event. Soul-powered vocal generator Zaachariaha Fielding (he/him), who hails from remote Mimili in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara lands in the north western corner of SA, and Brisbane-born keyboardist Michael Ross (ditto) create a sound that is truly world music. Electric Fields’ songs such as Gold Energy, Don’t Worry Baby and Pukulpa blend Balearic beats, Eurodance synth-pop and queer culture with a big dose of Fielding’s indigenous heritage. At their Main Stage concert, the powerhouse singer described the dynamic duo as a “blackfella and whitefella building a bridge” across the cultural divide. Fielding sings in Pitjantjatjara, Yankunytjatara and English; languages the dynamic duo took to a global audience when they represented Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest last year. Electric Fields’ performed both their Eurovision entries; the uplifting 2019 Australia Decides tilt 2000 and Whatever, and last year’s One Milkali (One Blood), an ode to togetherness that proved euphoric at their 2025 festival appearance. (Fielding referred to their less-than-ideal experience at the final in Malmo, Sweden, where global events ripped away the façade of unity among the artists. Even Eurovision is not immune to geopolitics.) While Ross gave serious high school drama teacher energy behind his keys, Fielding twirled, sang to the stars and offered cheeky bon mots between songs. The unique couple’s hour-long show peaked with a medley of 90s Eurodance bangers that was at once frivolous and sublime, including Rhythm of the Night, Ride on Time, Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good) and Philomena Cunk’s favourite Pump Up the Jam. The Main Stage arena transformed into a sweaty rave cave as heat radiated off the fresh bitumen and corrugated iron walls of the towering power station — a spectacular, monolithic venue that somehow came together in less than a week. (The teething problems at the festival eve event would be enough to keep a large brace of dentists employed, but enervated staff can’t be blamed. They should’ve started building the hub at least a month ago. They’ve got four years, at least, to get it right.) Earlier local Noongar singer and actor Jarred Wall, better known as Boox Kid, christened the venue with a confident set of somewhat generic electronic pop ballads plus the odd transcendent moment. Backed by a four-piece band, including an electric violinist, his meaty cover of Empire of the Sun hit Walking on a Dream and rendition of a song from Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse’s Noongar-language opera Koolbardi wer Wardong were both highlights. (Wall played Wardong in the WA Opera production.) The young performer with peroxide blonde hair really hit his stride when he donned an acoustic guitar for pop-rock earworms Landslide and finale I Don’t Mind. The latter continues the sun-dappled Perth pop sound of The Triffids, The Panics, The Money War and Timothy Nelson. Boox Kid more than warmed up the audience, he had the Power Station humming away. By the time Electric Fields’ completed their crowd-pleasing medley with Belinda Carlisle’s underrated Summer Rain, the venue was well and truly lit. I wasn’t the only one looking skyward, wondering whether Fielding’s force-of-nature vocals had somehow summoned a storm. No chance. Above the looming Power Station and makeshift parapets of the Main Stage, stars twinkled in a clear night sky. For that hour, at least, Electric Fields’ global sound made everything right in an otherwise turbulent world. Armageddon can wait. The verdict: 4 stars
