A Year 7 student suffered horrific injuries after his backpack became trapped between two train carriages and he was dragged several metres by the fast-moving transport in Melbourne.
Emergency services rushed to North Melbourne Station at about Monday 3.50pm, to treat the boy, who attends St Aloysius College.
It’s understood the boy was hit by the train, dragged several metres and then trapped underneath it for up to an hour as a crowd of commuters looked on.
It is believed the boy was trying to retrieve his mobile phone.
Fire Rescue Victoria received multiple triple-0 calls advising them a boy was trapped under a train.
A spokesman said crews arrived within five minutes to find the boy trapped and worked swiftly to extricate him.
“The patient who was then treated by Ambulance Victoria and transported to hospital,” a FRV spokesman said.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the boy was assessed and treated by intensive care and advanced life support paramedics at the scene.
“A boy with a serious lower body injury was transported by road ambulance to the Royal Children’s Hospital,” a spokesman said.
He is now said to be in a serious but stable condition.
Paramedic Alex Hemsley said the boy was rushed to hospital, with a pre-notification to the Royal Children’s Hospital with regards to their injuries.
“(Paramedics) did everything as quickly as they could have done, provided the highest level care to this young person on potentially on one of the most traumatic days of their lives,” Ms Hemsley said.
St Aloysius College principal Mary Farah wrote to the school community on Monday to provide an update.
“Our immediate priority is providing support to the family and ensuring our community is kept informed as reliable information becomes available,” Ms Farah wrote..
“In times of such sudden and distressing news, the strength of our college family is more important than ever.
“I know that your thoughts and compassion will be with the student and their family as they face this incredibly difficult time.”
Footage from the scene showed workers crouched between the two carriages while others on the platform assisted.
A stretcher could also be seen nearby.
Train lines were closed while emergency services responded to the incident.
