Perth Breakfast and Brunch review: Kith Eatery, Nedlands is the best new venue in Perth’s breaky scene

I’ve seen the best pancakes of my generation destroyed by a lack of condiments. Dry, claggy, begging for the sweet caress of syrup, cream or butter. I’ve pushed away plates of perfectly cooked carbohydrates because nobody in the kitchen understood the correct syrup-to-pancake ratio is “almost too much and then add a dash more”. I’ve wasted calories on sub-par pancakes, crepes and pikelets that needed only a dollop of mascarpone, double cream or Canada’s finest maple syrup to make the cost to my waistline worthwhile. None of this happened at Kith Eatery, a new cafe on the border between Nedlands and Shenton Park, which is surely the best new addition to Perth’s breakfast scene this year. At least. This delightful new restaurant has a menu that nods to both Italy (nduja and provolone abound) and Scandinavia (gin-cured salmon, anyone?) and those in the kitchen know how to do a lot of things. One of those is how to make a great plate of pancakes. Two vanilla-scented pancakes arrive bathing in a shallow bowl of syrup, topped with finely diced strawberries and a puff of white joy which, the menu informs me, is maple and miso mascarpone. I’ll take their word for it; all I know is the mascarpone and I are now planning a spring wedding. Chilli scrambled eggs are 2024’s smashed avo, which is to say: everywhere. No complaints here, either about the trend or Kith’s take on it, which is very good: fluffy, rich eggs on a single slice of sourdough, topped with fried shallots. The fact that the eggs come with a tangle of basil, mint and coriander and a wedge of lime for spritzing is further proof that the kitchen understands balance. Haloumi and zucchini fritters are next level: crispy on the outside and rich with chilli honey. Sumac-infused yoghurt offers contrast and a break from the heat, as do some very crisp witlof leaves. My only complaint is that hungry diners might want to add a slice of toast, all the better to soak up the drizzle of coriander oil. So far as complaints go “it was so good I wanted more” is a pretty nice one to have. I’m not at all surprised to learn that Kith is the offspring of Jess Chisari-Sneeuwjagt and Joel Sneeuwjagt, who used to run Someday Coffee in Floreat — which is where I last had fritters this good. I mentioned before that Kith knows how to do a lot of things and another one of them is make an excellent coffee: smooth, strong and with crema that’s good enough to turn my head from my mascarpone bride. They also do a terrific twist on a cold brew, which is made with coconut cream and lime and almost moves my typically staid brunch date to tears. Kith’s gorgeous interior is very western suburbs but without pretension: light, bright, fun and friendly, this deceptively big venue seems to be doing brisk business even on a weekday visit when, surely, everyone other than me should be at work. Whether that popularity is a short-term consequence of shiny-new-thing syndrome or if Kith will establish itself long-term remains to be seen. It deserves to be the latter because Kith is that rare combination of a great neighbourhood eatery that’s also a destination venue.
