A man has allegedly tried to kidnap a young child in a terrifying broad daylight attack in an inner-city suburb in Melbourne.
Two boys, aged 14 and five, were walking along Eldridge St, Footscray when a man approached the pair about 3.50pm on Monday.
Investigators were told the man allegedly attempted to pick up the five-year-old before punching the older boy in the face and knocking him to the ground.
Victoria Police said a nearby neighbour saw the horrifying incident unfold and yelled out to the man to put the child down.
The man then walked away towards Kinnear Street.
The 14-year-old was left with minor injuries, while the five-year-old boy was unharmed in the incident.
Police have since released images of a man they believe can assist with their inquiries.
