Phoenix surprised defending champions Albany Caledonian while Polonia were comfortable winners over Bayswater as the Great Southern Soccer Association’s senior men’s league hotted up with just two rounds remaining.
Polonia’s 3-0 victory on Saturday put them just a point behind league leaders Calies – with each side having a bye to come, Polonia sitting out on Saturday and Calies missing the last round on September 12.
Caelen Lambe grabbed two goals for Polonia with Jared Wiegele’s strike splitting Lambe’s double to see his side home with ease.
It completed a memorable week for the club as they were the inaugural winners of the men’s Due South Sponsors’ Cup, beating Rovers 2-0 on August 27.
Lambe was again the main threat, grabbing both goals, striking first on the half-hour and then again with 63 minutes gone.
Back in the league, Phoenix stunned the title favourites with a 3-2 victory.
Malcolm van Burgel grabbed a hat-trick as Phoenix went 2-0 up before being pegged back by a Joshua D’Aprile double.
Van Burgel’s third was the killer, and it came in the 78th minute to give his side a super win.
There were no such worries for the Calies women who trounced Polonia 7-0 in their senior league competition.
The goals poured in regularly and were nabbed by Holly Froehnelt (two), Stella Cuthbert (two) Ella Belfield, Stephanie Grant and Milla Trichilo.
Champions Calies are eight points clear of Phoenix with just two rounds remaining.
Phoenix have done their best to keep pace and were 4-1 winners over Denmark, while Sharks notched their first victory of the season with a 1-0 triumph over Rovers.
Amaya Dobbe hit two for Phoenix with Lee Dekker and Ruby Ryder their other scorers.
Lumeah Mashi replied for Denmark.
Erinn Norder grabbed the winner for Sharks, scoring with just two minutes to go.
Calies also got the better of Polonia in the men’s reserves, winning 2-0 with goals from D’Aprile and Baden Cummins-Green.
Phoenix walloped Rovers 7-1 with Rowan Terpstra, Damian Dekker and Jarrad Korthuis bagging two goals apiece.
Phoenix and Caledonians drew 1-1 in the women’s reserves’ competition while Denmark Rezzies were 5-0 winners over Polonia.
In the men’s masters on August 27, Rovers Vets and Phoenix were comfortable winners while Calies and Old Boys drew 0-0.
