Mt Barker police are appealing to the public for help investigating a reckless driving incident on Albany Highway last month after a driver was seen driving dangerously at more than 30km/h over the speed limit.

Police say a grey Holden Commodore station wagon was driving on Albany Highway between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on August 29 between Mt Barker and Kendenup.

The vehicle was seen travelling “well in excess of the posted speed limit” and performing multiple “dangerous driving manoeuvres” on the busy highway.

Mt Barker police officer-in-charge Sgt David Swain said the driver’s behaviour, which included speeding at more than 140km/h, taking corners at dangerously high speed and crossing to the wrong side of the road, put other road users at significant risk.

“When someone is travelling at that kind of speed, other drivers who would normally have time to take evasive action if they were in the wrong place just wouldn’t have time to do that, and so it makes the risk of a crash so much higher,” he said.

“This time of year as well, we’re getting to the start of harvest season so there’s a lot more heavy vehicles and oversize loads out on the roads.

“That’s just another element people should be slowing down and looking out for, and we would hate to see a nasty collision with machinery because of behaviour like this.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident on August 29, or who has CCTV, mobile phone or dash-cam footage of Albany Highway between Mt Barker and Kendenup around the time of the incident should contact police.
