Ocean Beach Brewing, Denmark’s newest beer maker is a community-focused passion project and a ‘taste of home’

Denmark’s newest brewery is a passion project brought to life by best friends Luke Low, Pete Chadwick and Megan Belcher who started the hyper-local and community-minded Ocean Beach Brewing earlier this year. Mr Low is the chief brewer having started his working life as a heavy-duty diesel mechanic and progressed into beer-making via homebrew, the Boston Brewery and the Hobart Brewing Company in Tasmania. It was while in Tasmania he realised he could set up something similar in Denmark and called on Ms Belcher, who has a background in hospitality, and electrician Mr Chadwick to help make it happen. His aim was to minimise the impact on the environment by using sustainable brewing practices while having a positive impact locally. Mr Low’s wife Krissy said his Hobart experience was key. “The business there was truly local and not available off the island,” she said. “That was when Luke decided to make the dream happen, so he came back to do something similar in Denmark. “The timing was right and his partners came on board.” She said her husband’s training as a mechanic had come in handy, while Mr Chadwick built the coolroom and has become an assistant brewer. “You seem to need an engineering and maths brain for brewing, so it’s been amazing how many of Luke’s skills have been transferable,” she said. “We want to be a focal point for the Denmark community. “The beer and what we do is all about a sense of place, a taste of home. “For example, we did a special Magpies’ Lager for the president’s lunch at Denmark-Walpole Football Club. “It was a nice moment for us as a family because our daughter played her first game for them at around the same age as Luke was when he started there in 1992.” The brewery’s range includes a draft, a pale ale, hazy pale ale and mid-strength lager. It is available at several pubs and two bottle shops in Denmark, plus Dune and Sotao in Albany.
