Pivot Support Services’ Great Southern Community Hub saved by funding from Stan Perron Charitable Foundation

Albany’s community hub has been saved just days ahead of its planned closure thanks to the generous contribution of a Perth-based charity. Pivot Support Services has been running the Great Southern Community Hub at a loss since 2019 and was set to close on September 30 without external funding. On Thursday — just days before the service was due to end — the organisation announced it had met its funding shortfall thanks to an undisclosed sum from the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation. When Pivot’s staff heard the funding had been secured, the news was met with spontaneous applause and some tears. The generous contribution means Pivot can now cover the hub’s operating costs for the next three years and fund its expansion to Katanning. Pivot chair Marcelle Cannon said she was grateful for the “enormous” outpouring of community support. “This is a victory for our community,” she said. “We were not going to let this service close without a fight. “Over the last five years, we’ve developed a successful framework for addressing disadvantage that works. “It’s become the heart of our operations, and we see its positive impact on people’s lives every day.” Chief executive Ian Neil said the funding was “just the start” and would allow Pivot to “build something special” which could be expanded to other parts of regional Australia. “Over the next three years, we’ll build a regional service that will positively impact the lives of over 5000 people . . . which can be replicated in other parts of the country,” he said. Mr Neil said Pivot was talking to universities and grant bodies for more funding and would continue to lobby politicians. He was particularly grateful to the Albany Community Foundation, which he said had provided critical backing and support. ACF executive officer James Leiper said the foundation was “so pleased” to see Pivot secure the vital funding. “We look forward to continuing to support people in Albany who have fallen on hard times and are in genuine need or crisis,” he said. “The hub clearly has had, and now will continue to have, a profound positive impact for so many people in our community.” The hub will remain open three days a week until the funding is released in December after which time the service will expand to five days in Albany with a limited service in Katanning. The organisation’s campaign to keep the service open began with an open letter to the Premier in March (Albany Advertiser, March 5) and sparked a groundswell of community support with petitions collecting 1788 signatures. The hub is a wraparound service providing emergency and crisis relief to those experiencing disadvantage, including help with housing, financial aid, and practical support.
