Noah, Oliver and Isla were the most popular names registered in the Great Southern last year, according to data from the WA Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

In 2024, Noah pipped Jack in the region while Mia headed off Daisy and Harper.

This time Noah shared top billing with Oliver, ahead of Henry, while Isla headed off Grace and Ivy.

In 2025, the region very much reflected the statewide trend, where Isla grabbed pole position after sharing it with Charlotte in 2024.

Charlotte slipped to fifth in the Great Southern but held on to the runner-up spot in WA overall.

There were 209 Noahs born across WA, 190 Olivers and 151 Theodores.

In the girls’ list, 150 were named Isla, 138 Charlotte and 117 Grace.

There were 33,232 births registered in WA in 2025, up from 30,825 the previous year.

Births, Deaths and Marriages acting registrar Heath Bennett said choosing a baby name was a big decision for parents.

He said the data often reflected different trends in different regions.

“For instance, in 2025 in the Goldfields-Esperance region, the boys’ names Billy and Levi tied at number one,” he said.

“Billie and Maggie tied in second position, behind Isla at number one, in the Kimberley/Pilbara/Gascoyne.

“There, Jack was the most popular boys’ name.

“There was a three-way tie for most popular girls’ name in the Wheatbelt/Midwest, where Grace, Isla and Remi were equal number one, and Oliver topped boys’ name in Peel,” Mr Bennett said.

Ella and Jack topped WA’s baby names 20 years ago, while 50 years ago the State’s most popular names were Michelle and Michael.

Isla, Noah and Oliver have a way to go before they catch WA’s most popular monikers.

Margaret was the most popular girls’ name for 22 years on the trot from 1930, while John was top of the chart for 21 years in a row, again from 1930.

Families have 60 days from the birth of a child to lodge registration with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, either via a paper form or online.

Some 88 per cent chose to register online, according to Mr Bennett.
