A new year marked a new season for Broome Beach Volleyball, and returning underdogs Freeballin’ were off to a flying start with a straight-sets victory.

Freeballin’ took on newcomers Young Guns on Wednesday last week, and experience was expected to triumph over enthusiasm.

The opening set saw Freeballin’ work up a quick lead, capitalising on Young Guns’ wayward passing and leaving them in their dust, 25-8.

Despite a determination to improve on their first-set efforts, things did not get better for Young Guns early in the second set, with their passes continuing to fall short. Once again, Freeballin’ capitalised with strong serves to build up an early lead.

Just when it began to look bleak for Young Guns, the contest turned a corner as the underdogs finally shook off their first-game jitters and produced some good rallies against Freeballin’. But it was too little, too late as Freeballin’ went on to take the second set, 25-6.

The final set saw rallies continue to improve as Young Guns attempted to try and get one set off Freeballin’. Freeballin’ continued their strong serves and great cover while Young Guns continued to show promising signs for future matches as they began to gel as a team.

Despite the early scare, Freeballin’ were just too good, going on to win the third set, 25-10, and secure the 3-0 victory.

Elsewhere, Islanders, Alternative Pancakes and Dig Deeper all managed to pull off straight-sets wins over Beta Blockers, Seijoh and Set for Life respectively.
