Firefighters are getting on top of a bushfire in the City of Nedlands.

More than 13 fire crews were dispatched to the scrub fire after it was reported in the Hollywood Reserve in Karrakatta about 3pm.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services had issued a bushfire watch and act for people in the area bounded by Smyth Road, Monash Avenue, Winthrop Avenue and Aberdare Road in the eastern part of Karrakatta.

There is a current bushfire advice alert in place for people in an area bounded by Aberdare Road, Winthrop Avenue, Smyth Road, Carrington Street, Loch Street and Railway Road.

A spokesperson said firefighters had already had to battle a large number of spot fires 20-30m in front of the fire front, with a large ash cloud blanketing the affected area.

He added the blaze was raging in an area that had not been burned in 15 years, indicating the potential of the fire spreading very rapidly.

Air support has been requested, and two helicopters are now en route to the area.

Residents in the vicinity of Smyth Road and Karella Street in the southern part of Karrakatta are being warned of large amounts of smoke in the area and urged to stay alert and monitor the situation.

“Although there is no immediate danger you need to be aware and keep up to date in case the situation changes,” the latest alert says.
