Mark Anthony Jnr Unchango: Child rapist in brutal sex attack on woman walking home from train station jailed

A man who had only just got out of prison for raping two children when he repeatedly and violently sexually assaulted a woman as she walked home from Whitfords train station has been jailed. Mark Anthony Junior Unchango had been released five weeks earlier and was on a court-ordered supervision program when he attacked the woman on the night of December 19, 2024. The woman, aged in her 40s, noticed the stranger following her in the darkness and had texted her husband that she would be home soon. “Sorry, you gave me a shock,” she said to Unchango after he startled her, asking if a bus was coming. Without warning, the then 21-year-old methamphetamine and alcohol abuser pushed her into bushes and repeatedly punched her as she screamed and fought back, grasping at branches and trying to poke his eyes. Prosecutor Sarah Jessup said the victim asked Unchango what he wanted and he replied: “I want you”. The woman offered him her laptop, phone and bank cards, and said she had children in an attempt to dissuade him, but he was much larger and overpowered her, raping her three times in a 10-minute nightmare ordeal. “You callously ignore her,” District Court Judge Nicholas Egan said on Friday. “Your victim did all she could to prevent you.” The woman managed to break free and ran into a busy road, where a motorist picked her up and brought her home. “You would continue to have raped your victim had she not escaped,” Judge Egan told the now 23-year-old. The judge said his offending was extremely serious, describing it as “brutal, vicious and savage”, and a dramatic escalation of his significant criminal record, which began when he was just 11. Ms Jessup said the woman suffered “monumental” degradation - forced at one stage to facilitate his vile act as she feared for her life - and the continuing impact on her was “not capable of being captured in words”. The judge found Unchango was at high risk of reoffending, saying a 10-year sentence was warranted. “You have sexually offended against both children and adults,” he said. Unchango — who unsuccessfully tried to have his name suppressed — held his head in his hands for most of the sentencing. He will be eligible for parole after serving eight years.
