RSPCA: Midvale woman banned from owning pets after leaving dog and puppies to starve at abandoned property

WARNING: DISTRESSING IMAGES A Midvale woman who left a dog and its puppies to starve inside an abandoned property has been labelled as “disgusting” while being slapped with a huge fine and banned from owning pets. In the Midland Magistrates Court last week, the 29-year-old woman pleading guilty to failing to provide her two-year-old Stafford shire terrier-cross with adequate food and water. The terrier-cross — named Ruby — first came to the attention of the RPSCA in May after officers received a report of a severely underweight dog inside the woman’s home. The caller told officers “every bone in the dog’s body” was visible and said there were puppies at the property, while the animals had no access to water or food. When an inspector visited the home, she found Ruby severely emaciated, with the outline of her hips, ribs, spine, skull and femurs clearly visible. Ruby also had three neonatal puppies who looked to be between 10 and 14 days old. There was no water at the property and only some biscuits which had been scattered by the person who made the cruelty report. Ruby and her puppies were taken to the Animal Care Centre in Malaga for immediate assessment and treatment. The terrier-cross weighed just 21kg — around 10kgs underweight — and was severely emaciated. “She was also moderately dehydrated and lunged at a tap to drink from it,” RSPCA WA said. The 29-year-old owner said she was not living at the property anymore and was being paid to feed the dogs. She also claimed she was not aware Ruby had given birth. Magistrate Mark Millington said there was “clearly a lack of care” and the cruelty was “compounded” due to Ruby having neonatal puppies. He said it was “disgusting” and “unfortunate people do this to animals”. The owner was fined $5000 and prohibited from owning a domestic animal for five years. RSPCA WA Inspector Manager Kylie Green said there is no excuse to leave an animal starving and alone at a property. “Ruby would have been under significant stress trying to care for her newborn puppies without even having food and water for herself. “If you are struggling to properly care for animals in your care, you must reach out for help before the situation becomes dire like this one.” Sadly, one of the pups had to be euthanised, however, one has been adopted and another is currently waiting for a new home. Ruby is recovering with a foster carer and has gained over 10kgs.
