Narrogin mental health nurse accused of raping and grooming his teenage patient will walk free on bail

A Wheatbelt mental health nurse who allegedly groomed and raped his teenage patient a dozen times has been granted bail. Adam Simon McGovern fronted Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday accused of sexually assaulting a mentally vulnerable 14-year-old girl between 2016 and 2018, and of indecently recording children in public places. In addition to granting the 48-year-old bail, Magistrate Sarah Oliver has also imposed an interim order to suppress the arguments made during the bail application hearing from the public. This includes why Mr McGovern was granted bail. Perth detectives arrested Mr McGovern on January 13 as part of their ongoing investigation into the man’s alleged sexual offences against a child who was under his care in Narrogin. “His behaviour is believed to have been of a predatory nature, to prepare a child or young person for sexual activity at a later time,” police said in a statement. At the time of the alleged incidents, Mr McGovern was a qualified mental health nurse, who worked for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in regional WA. Perth detectives executed a search warrant on the man’s Mount Nasura home, where they found and seized a number of electronic devices which were found to contain child exploitation material. “Some of the content included evidence of children being filmed unbeknown to them in public places, including on public transport, at public beaches and outside schools in the Perth metropolitan area,” the police statement added. He was charged with 19 offences including 12 counts of sexually penetrating a child aged between 13 and 16, five counts of indecently dealing with a child aged between 13 and 16 and indecently recording a child. Mr McGovern’s bail conditions include surrendering his passport, reporting to the Armadale police station daily, having no unsupervised contact with children and not contacting his alleged victim. He is set to be released from Hakea prison as soon as his $100,000 bail is paid. Mr McGovern’s partner was present in the public gallery during the hearing and hugged his lawyer after the hearing.
