Police investigate after highly addictive drug goes missing from St John WA station in the South West

An investigation has been launched into how a quantity of a highly addictive and potentially fatal drug went missing from the safe of a St John WA station in the South West. The West Australian can reveal WA Police are looking into the disappearance of the Schedule 8 substance after St John WA reported a “discrepancy” in its records at one of its regional stations. A WA Police spokeswoman confirmed the probe was launched after the matter was reported to police on May 3. No arrests have been, she said, adding that inquiries were ongoing. While she did not disclose what the substance was, The West Australian understands it is fentanyl. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is similar to morphine but is around 50 to 100 times more potent. It is used to treat patients with severe or chronic pain but because of its potency can lead to drug dependence. Paramedics have access to the drugs to treat patients out in the field, with the prescription medication kept in safes at stations throughout the state. Quantities are also monitored. A St John WA spokeswoman confirmed to The West Australian a quantity of Schedule 8 medication had gone missing from its records. She said an audit of its reporting and tracking systems at a regional ambulance station highlighted a discrepancy but she would not reveal how much. “The matter was immediately reported to the WA Police Force and remains the subject of an active investigation,” she said. “Given the ongoing nature of this police investigation, we are unable to comment further on specific details. “We can, however, confirm that we are cooperating fully with law enforcement and have initiated our own internal review. “The safety of our patients, integrity of our services, and wellbeing of our frontline responders remain our highest priorities. We continue to support our ambulance crews in the field with the resources they need to deliver safe and effective care.”
