Central Regional TAFE reaffirmed its commitment to reconciliation through an immersive on-country professional development experience, which featured famous Indigenous actor and TV presenter Ernie Dingo.

The experience was led by lecturer Katie Clune and included her Aboriginal students and Central Regional TAFE Aboriginal staff engaging in meaningful cultural learning activities.

It coincided with Reconciliation Week on June 2, tying in with theme of “All In”.

A core part of the Central Regional TAFE initiative aimed to strengthen Aboriginal communities by being respectful about embedding the practices across education delivery.

For the event, the group travelled from Geraldton to Mullewa District High School. This was a gesture of appreciation to recognise the school’s ongoing support by allowing one student each week to attend training at the Central Regional TAFE campus.

Dingo, who has personal ties to the Mullewa region, joined the trip and shared his stories and insights on being connected to country, community and cultural identity.

He spoke alongside Central Regional TAFE staff member Charlie Collard, who also shares connections to Mullewa and reflected on his history and experience.

Central Regional TAFE managing director Jo Payne said the experience reflected their efforts to learn and engage with National Reconciliation Week.

“National Reconciliation Week is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on our shared history and consider how we each contribute to a more respectful, inclusive and equitable future,” she said.

“The theme ‘All In’ reminds us that reconciliation belongs to all of us. It’s about taking meaningful action, listening to Aboriginal voices, respecting culture and Country, and working together to create positive outcomes for future generations.

“Working together with Aboriginal communities and creating space to listen, learn and share stories is essential. These experiences help build understanding, strengthen relationships and support culturally responsive practice across our organisation.”
