Permanent support for iconic cyclone-damaged Geraldton tree

The City of Greater Geraldton yesterday installed a permanent support to the well-known CBD leaning tree, which was severely damaged during cyclone Seroja.

Roots of the near-century-old tree at the corner of Durlacher and Sanford streets were damaged in the storm. The City fenced it off amid safety fears.

On Wednesday, Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn announced plans to save the tree after an assessment by an arborist and structural engineer.

“The canopy has been pruned to reduce stress on the root system, and a permanent support will be installed under the main branch by the end of this week,” he said.

“Temporary fencing will remain for a short period after the works to allow for safe monitoring of the tree post-installation.”

When the Guardian revealed the tree was at risk of the chopping block in May, hundreds of residents took to social media expressing sadness.

Friends of Geraldton Gardens chair Irene Ghannage said the plan to save the tree was a “fabulous outcome for Geraldton”.

“FroGGs is pleased to hear it ... It’s great to see the community banding together to protect an icon,” she said.

She hopes the renewed interest in the tree will lead to a greater appreciation for the landmark, suggesting a plaque to commemorate the tree.
