Big grant to help Shire of Katanning realise KAARL Yarning Place Project

Shire of Katanning president Kristy D’Aprile has announced that the KAARL Yarning Place project has received a significant boost after securing a $120,000 grant from Lotterywest. Named after the Noongar word for fire, the KAARL project is part of the shire’s cultural strategy to showcase and share the stories of the Great Southern community through art and place-making. “This funding will play a pivotal role in bringing to life a vital community space that has emerged as part of the Katanning Public Arts Trail Strategy and Reconciliation Action Plan,” Cr D’Aprile said. Undertaken in collaboration with members of the Noongar community including the Katanning Noongar Leadership Group, the project will create a space for the Katanning Noongar Community to come together to yarn, reflect, heal and share while being inclusive of non-Aboriginal community members. The Yarning Place will include a covered shelter, a fire pit, landscaping and pathways and host cultural events like ceremonies, performances and festivals. Around $250,000 sourced primarily though grants is slated for the project.
