Bremer Bay ready to get back to business this WA Day long weekend

Regional West Australians can finally get moving when the State’s border restrictions are lifted at midnight tonight — a move set to bring a welcome wave of tourists to Bremer Bay for the WA Day long weekend.

Premier Mark McGowan announced on Monday West Australians would be able to travel freely anywhere within WA, except for the Kimberley and parts of the East Pilbara, from Friday.

The announcement came less than two weeks after WA launched into phase two of the State Government’s easing of COVID-19 restrictions to kickstart the economy, casting a lifeline to the State’s struggling tourism sector.

With regional borders shut since April 1, Bremer Bay tourism operators missed out on the tail-end of the region’s peak tourist season, including the Easter and Anzac Day periods.

Bremer Bay Caravan and Camping Park manager Joye Smith said with families now free to explore most of the State, the park had already received more bookings than this time last year.

“Once those restrictions were lifted there has been an influx of phone calls and emails,” she said.

“For Bremer Bay, June is not one of the busiest long weekends — March and September are a lot bigger.

“But obviously a lot of people want to get out and get some fresh air in a different location.

“We are definitely taking a lot more bookings than we normally would.

“It’s good for not only the park but the community to have everyone coming back.”

Bremer Bay Beaches Resort and Tourist Park owner David Harder said at the start of the week the business’ cabins were almost booked out for the long weekend — a positive sign at a usually quiet time of year.

“It’s always great to have your customers coming in and they really do enjoy Bremer Bay,” he said.

“The fishing takes off in wintertime down here.

“Bremer Bay always puts on a winter display.”
