Corey Duane Stanley Chester sentenced after stabbing the tyre of a stranger’s car at Kojonup service station

A 32-year-old man stabbed the tyre of a stranger’s car at a Kojonup service station because he was angry his bank card had been declined. Corey Duane Stanley Chester did not appear at Katanning Magistrates Court on April 10, but he was convicted in his absence of one count of damaging property and one count of driving without authority. Police prosecutor Sergeant Peter Yuswack told the court Chester was driving southbound on Albany Highway about 4pm on July 12 last year, when he stopped at Hillview Roadhouse and Motel in Kojonup. He went into the roadhouse to buy, but his card was declined. That prompted Chester to pull out a knife and stab the tyre of a green vehicle parked next to his Ford Focus before leaving the area. Sgt Yuswack said the owner of the damaged vehicle heard a hissing sound and discovered one of their tyres had been deflated. He attended a local tyre repair shop who fitted a spare tyre, before getting a replacement once in Albany. Chester told police he was angry with his father because he had told him there was money in the account when there was not. In her sentencing remarks, Magistrate Dianne Scaddan described the offending as “impetuous”. Chester was fined $125 and ordered to pay $1000 in costs to the victim for the property damage charge. He was fined $1000, ordered to pay $259.30 in costs and had his licensed suspended for another nine months.
