Crackdown on reckless riding of unlicensed off-road motorcycles around Katanning

Katanning police have warned they are cracking down on the reckless riding of unlicensed off-road motorcycles around town. Sen. Sgt Carlos Correia, Katanning’s new officer-in-charge, said one of his first priorities would be stopping the reckless use of motorcycles on roads, footpaths and through bush. Police are out to put an end to the illegal behaviour, which they say is putting residents at risk. “In afternoons we have a lot of motorbikes driven recklessly on roads and footpaths,” Sen. Sgt Correia said. “They are off-road, unlicensed bikes cutting loose across roads and pathways and they are putting themselves and others at risk. “It’s mainly the young folk, and we don’t want anyone injured. “We won’t tolerate it, the community won’t tolerate it, and if they are caught we will seize the bike and if the evidence is there, they will be charged. “There are some enthusiastic bike riders out there and we don’t want to stop them taking their bike out and riding it in the appropriate areas, but it has to be in the right areas at the right time.” Last Friday, police seized a bike that was allegedly being ridden illegally around Pemble Street. “Members of the public can contact the local station if they see it,” Sen. Sgt Correia. “If they film it or get a picture of the bike and we know where it is, we can issue a surrender notice. “The community are sick and tired of it and they want action. “We will confiscate the bikes — simple as that.”
