Cup with X factor back to thrill

The Borden X Cup will return for a third year, with up to 250 competitors set to descend on the small country town to compete in the exciting shortened format of football and netball in April. A total of twelve AFLX sides and eight FAST5 sides will take part in round robin matches on April 4 before play-off and grand final games will be held later in the afternoon. The winner of the shortened football games will take home a $2500 cheque, and the winner of FAST5 netball will pocket $1500. Entry is free for spectators, with a charter bus from Albany to Borden for the day in the pipeline to take spectators up. Canteen facilities will be available for lunch and dinner while the bar will be open from 2pm onwards. Event co-ordinator Pip Moir said the town was looking forward to the event. “This year’s event will run very similarly to last year,” she said. “We think we’ve perfected the running sheet over the years so it should be like clockwork. “The last two years have been such a great success so we’re thrilled to be hosting the event for a third year. “We have a few teams returning for a third year, which is fantastic to see they’re so keen to return, but we also have a few new teams mixed in and we’re excited that they want to be a part of it. “It’s such a great carnival atmosphere on the day.” A charter bus for spectators from Albany to Borden for the day is being considered. Moir said there was plenty of local flavour in the competition. “Last year we were excited to form a merged Borden/Ongerup AFLX side to compete in the carnival, with the Warperup Roo-Pies,” she said. “We’re happy to say the Roo-Pies will be taking to the field once more and we’ll also have a Warperup Fast5 side this year. “The teams have always been such great competitors who play with a great show of sportsmanship and fun. “The day wouldn’t be as successful without the incredible support from the Borden community. “It’s amazing to see such fantastic community spirit in our small town.” North Albany won the Borden AFLX Cup last year, while Bullet Railway took out the FAST5 netball.
