Great Southern communities ready to pay tribute to the fallen ... with a difference

On an Anzac Day like no other, families across the Great Southern will take to their driveways at first light to honour the nation’s brave servicemen and women. For the first time since World War II, dawn services have been cancelled, but that will not stop members of the Katanning 518 Army Cadets from paying their respects at home. Anzac Day is usually the biggest event of the year for the cadets, who proudly flank the Katanning memorial at the annual service. This year, they will stand to attention outside their homes. For Katanning’s Anyon family, service to their country runs in the blood. Cadet Sgt Jaylen Anyon, 16, said Anzac Day was a time to honour his grandfather, who retired last year after more than 37 years with the navy, including service in the Falklands War. Jaylen said it was important to pay respect every year, but this year would be a test of the Anzac spirit. “For me, it has just been something I have always done from a young age, and it symbolises what other people have done so that we can live the way we can,” he said. “This year is going to be the most important year because we have to overcome what we are going through to still remember them. “It is important to do it this year more than ever because it shows that you really care.” Jaylen has plans to embark on his own career of service with hopes of serving in the army as an engineer. He said it was special to think that one day he might be honoured alongside his heroes. “I realised doing my part now is almost like doing my part in the future,” he said. “I just feel like it is what I can do to thank them, whether they are here or not, for what we are so lucky to have.” Cadet Bodhi Anyon, 14, said taking part in Anzac Day was an important way to honour those who had served such as his grandfather. “It is important to show respect to the past people that have served to make our country what it is and make us feel safe,” he said. “My pop had many achievements in life and has done many things that I would love to do.” For Cpl Mary-Jane Tussler, 16, standing to attention on Anzac Day is a time to remember her big brother, award-winning cadet Thomas Tussler, who died a few years ago. “My favourite part of the day is being able to stand in front of everyone wearing the uniform and knowing I am representing my country,” she said. “I feel really proud to honour my country and all of those who have fought for us and those who are currently fighting for us.”
