Katanning community unveils sculpture celebrating decade of dedication to Lake Ewlyamartup restoration

The Katanning community and the Lake Ewlyamartup Working Group assembled at Piesse Park last month to reveal a sculpture honouring the dedication of hundreds of volunteers who helped restore the health of Lake Ewlyamartup. The sculpture was unveiled on December 18 to serve as a permanent reminder of the work many local community members and groups have dedicated to the lake for the past decade. Lake Ewlyamartup is about 18km east of Katanning and is a popular area for Great Southerners to kayak, bird watch and take part in water sports. The metal sculpture was crafted by local artist Brenton Bouffler and depicts the steady upstream waters of the Ewlyamartup system that flows along the waterways to the lake. Katanning Landcare’s Ella Maesepp said the sculpture was a powerful reminder for all who have been involved in the lake’s restoration. “The sculpture reminds us that the whole catchment is connected and interdependent,” Ms Maesepp said. “Lake Ewlyamartup can only ever be as healthy as the water flowing into it. “It was as a community that we have brought the lake back to life and it is as a community that we can maintain and improve this local gem for the future.”
