The Katanning Historical Society has received a helping hand in its efforts to preserve the town’s past.

The organisation was awarded a $13,637 Lotterywest grant by Agricultural Region MLC Shelley Payne on a visit to Katanning last month.

The funding will be used to help the group’s preservation and presentation activities, including the purchase of new display cabinets, shelving and storage units.

A Katanning Historical Society spokesman thanked Lotterywest for the support.

“This will make a huge difference, to what we can do within the museum,” he said.

Ms Payne was shown around the group’s Taylor Street premises by deputy president Rob Godfrey and fellow members of the society, which was first established in 1937.

Along with being shown some of the group’s artefacts, Ms Payne tried her hand at using a quill at the Old Dongolocking School building.
