Katanning Joey Scout Emily Crosby receives highest honour for age group

It has only been a few months since a Katanning Scout achieved peak recognition in their age category, but another member has just repeated the feat. Emily Crosby was presented with the Challenge Award at a ceremony held at the Katanning All Ages Playground on May 25 in recognition of her achievements with the Joey Scouts, which includes members aged between 5 and 7 years old. The presentation ceremony was attended by the district Scout commissioner, family and fellow Katanning Scout members. To obtain the Challenge Award, Emily was required to complete all three milestones in Joey Scouts. She completed the first stage of her bushwalking, bushcraft and camping skills; six two-hour activities in at least two specialist areas; and a three-hour adventurous journey. When asked which camp had been her favourite, Emily said “the last camp”, where she led a group of Joey Scouts on a 5km hike at Wave Rock and went to the Kulin Water Slide as part of her adventurous journey. Emily’s mother Michaela Crosby expressed her pride in her daughter. “Without a doubt, Scouts is by far the best thing we have allowed our kids to do,” Ms Crosby said. During the past two and a half years, Emily has led or assisted with 16 Scouts activities, participated in more than 60, taken part in 10 camps and hiked 31km. Katanning Joey Scout Leader Mark Sander said it had been a pleasure having Emily in the group and he looked forward to seeing her progress as a Cub Scout. Emily’s achievement comes after Zavier Potter in April became only the third Cub Scout in the history of the Katanning club to obtain the Grey Wolf Award.
