Katanning residents will enjoy the wonders of a local silver screen after more than a decade without one as plans for the Katanning Community Cinema inch closer to showtime. The relaunch of a local cinema has been in the pipeline since late 2017, when the Shire of Katanning called on local service organisations to help bring movies back to town. Members of the Rotary Club of Katanning, Katanning Lions Club, Katanning Apex and Rotaract have since joined forces to source and install a new 5.6m screen and projector in the Katanning Town Hall. Katanning Community Cinema chairman Keith Ohlsen said the project was a big community effort. “We hope we will be able to get access to some recent-release films so people don’t have to travel as far to get their entertainment,” he said. “We are happy to entertain any ideas to make the best use of what should be a fantastic resource.” Mr Ohlsen said Hoyts Cinemas would help with the installation of the equipment to help bring the theatre up to a professional standard. “It’s an amazing old building and has great acoustics,” he said. “Hopefully that will make everyone’s experience of the movies and other events here even better.” The team aims to show up to three movies a fortnight, with ticket sales helping maintain the cinema and license new films. Deputy chairman Doug Cherry said the committee would love to see members of Katanning’s diverse multicultural community make use of the screen to showcase their cultures. “That is what it is all about, getting the community involved in using the facility,” he said. “The more groups we can attract here, the better off the community is and the better the resource is used.” Mr Ohlsen said if all went to plan, the team hoped to have a movie on the big screen by the end of the year. “It’s been a real epic but I am hoping the epic is reaching its end — the next epic will be the movie,” he said. “We’ve had community involvement until now, but it is time for new community members to come along and be involved in the fine tuning.” New volunteers are welcome to attend Katanning Community Cinema’s annual general meeting next Thursday at 5.30pm at the Katanning Town Hall.
