Katanning’s Lara Rodney has been selected for the WA School Sport State under-12s netball team for the upcoming national championships in September. The Katanning Senior High School student’s abilities were recognised at the recent school country week, which saw her selected for the 12-girls team. Lara is a member of the Katanning Netball Association, playing juniors for NAB Lighting and in the senior competition for the Allstars Netball Club. Her development in the sport began at an early age through the grassroots netball program. While netball is one of the most popular sports among young girls in the State and being selected is a huge achievement, Lara said the feeling was “normal” and she had a strong focus on winning. “I’m going there to win and I’ll be a little bit disappointed if we lose,” the young gun said. Lara travels to Perth twice a week to attend training sessions and said it was awesome to be able to train with the best players from around the State. “It’s cool to be able to play with people who have the same ability as me,” she said. Lara is also a talented basketball player and has represented Katanning at this year’s WA Country Championships, playing both under-12s and under-15s. “The skills are similar between both sports and it helps me in netball,” Lara said. The uniform presentation will take place in Perth on August 31 and the participating States will converge at the Gold Netball Centre from September 10-15.
