Kojonup Football Club celebrates centenary

The Kojonup Football Club will celebrate their decorated 100-year history at the Kojonup Memorial Hall on Saturday night. The club will host the Tigers at Kojonup Sporting Complex with a crowd of around 400 expected to attend the centenary celebrations, including former players, coaches, life members and their families. The Cougars were established in 1923 as the Magpies before a shift from the Katanning Districts Football Association to the Central Great Southern Football League in 1959 saw them adopt their new emblem. The club has won 14 premierships and played in four leagues throughout its 100-year history. Twelve of those flags came between 1960 and 1990 in the Central Great Southern Football League, one in the Great Southern Football League in 1997 and the most recent in 2014 in the Lower South West Football League. Australian Football Hall of Fame inductees Peter Bell and Stephen Michael are among some of the greats who have played for the club. Legend Murray Gibbs is the club’s games record holder, playing 265 games over a storied career that included captaining his side to the 1981 premiership. Steering committee member and former player Matt Webb said the night would kick off at 6:30pm with numerous festivities throughout. “Past players, including former MLA Terry Waldron, will attend the night as guest speakers and we will also run through some key moments in the club’s history before auctioning off commemorative jumpers that are half-Cougar and half-Magpie. “We are also catering food and drinks for the event and have a DJ playing music into the night.”
