Road race champ Simon Billeau wins 150km Wild Gravel race through the Stirling Range, Dal Pozzo takes fourth

When the dust settled on the Wild Gravel event in Gnowangerup, it was Perth-based Frenchman Simon Billeau who took the spoils in the prestigious 150km race, completing the ride through the Stirling Range in 4hr. 35min. 38sec. Billeau, who was once a world-ranked ironman triathlete, took out the overall race and was top of the pile in the 40-44 age group. A State road racing champion and one of WA’s best on two wheels, he survived a disastrous crash in 2013 while racing in New Zealand, losing control of his bike and needing surgery to his femur, elbow and nose before taking a year to recover. On Saturday, he finished seven minutes ahead of a field which included Albany’s Brett Dal Pozzo, who was fourth overall and clocked 4:51:01 at an average pace of 30.9km/h. Dal Pozzo, who missed the Gravel World Championships in the Netherlands to be in Gnowangerup, was happy with his ride. “There were five of us who worked together and stayed together for about 120km,” he said. “At that point we went our own ways, and the strongest guys won. “The last 20km were super tough, they were really hilly.” While 44 men contested the longest distance, there was just one woman registered for 150km of pain. Lauren Humphreys completed the course in 5:50:48, a time which put her inside the top 20 finishers overall. Dal Pozzo was sitting third after 108km, averaging 35.5km/h but as the clock ticked on towards noon, he slowed to 23.2km/h as he tackled the climbs to the finish. Nick Bakker won the 100km race, finishing in 3:20:17, a mammoth 31 minutes in front of Lance Portman who pipped Roger Hughes for third by just two seconds. Bakker was best in the 35-39 age group; Portman topped the 55-59s and Hughes the 60-64s. Murray Hall, in fourth overall, clocked 3:53:44 to win the 70-74 section. Jennifer Davis, in the 40-44 section, was the first woman home in 4:16:16 which was a time which put her 14th overall across both genders. Stephen Plant was the 60km champion in 1:57:04, with Douglas Foulkes-Taylor second 19min. adrift while Darcie Richards was the first woman home in 2:38:33. Craig Henderson was first across the tape in the 30km ride, in 1:16:58, while Alison Walker was the quickest woman in 1:21:13. Rachel Nelson completed the 12km race in 36:24, ahead of under-19 competitors Holly and Edith de Jonge. Graeme Savage took just 40:15 to win the men’s 12km race. Those who preferred to run rather than ride competed over distances of 42km (marathon), 21.1km (half-marathon), 12km and 5km. Michael Snart won the marathon in 3:22:20 ahead of William O’Keeffe in 3:45:33. Rowena de Groot was first home in the women’s race in 4:28:51. The champions at 21.1km were Tony Spicer and Sarah McPherson with Samuel Alexeeff and Christina Ladyman the 12km winners. Ava Anderson won the women’s 5km while Bryn Anderson held off Euan Anderson to take the men’s title.
