Students take a healthy interest in school’s expo

Katanning Senior High School held a successful Health Expo on Friday.

The school’s Year 10 students set up multiple stalls at the school gym to promote various aspects of everyday health.

Students were grouped into teams of four or five and each team designed and created their own stalls.

Each team focused on one particular health aspect and introduced the topic of their own choosing — they then introduced fun activities and games.

One group decided to focus on mental health issues, such as anxiety, and introduced the topic to other students with stress-relief activities.

Another group chose the subject of drink driving and invited the students to play a racing video game while wearing a virtual reality goggles that created the illusion of how alcohol can affect motor function.

Another popular stall that many female students attended focused on the idea of body image and building self-esteem and confidence by taking care of skin and learning to apply make-up.

Various health services such as Palmerston, Western Australian Allied Health Interested in Bush Experience (WAALHIIBE) and Anglicare also set up their own stalls.

About 250 students and 40 parents and staff attended the expo.

Health and physical education teacher Jadon Gielingh said he was blown away by the enthusiasm and commitment from his Year 10 students.

“They put a significant amount of effort in to ensure that their stalls were engaging and informative,” Mr Gielingh said.

“ It was amazing to see a range of both local and Perth-based agencies support the KSHS Health Expo.”
